Media For The Masses. |
Back in the Fifties, there was a popular television show called 'You Are There" with Walter Cronkite, full of eyewitness events which occurred on the world's stage. This was typed as a public-service program which actual happenings as they took place, and the viewer was indeed 'there.' Virtually, you were there from so many different perspectives.
Media is not like that today. It is selective and full of speculation and propaganda to make it look real. A good part of those Reality shows is playacting. Media is as the real history of today, partly made up on the spot to appear sensational.
Look at how the media made up rumors about suicides of the Michael Jackson fans if he were convicted of the abuses he did to many young boys. He pretended to be sick and the media were there promoting that falsehood to get pity for the poor white guy.
The media has become mediated, sated with false information and written from a prejudiced point of view. The media think they rule this country, as we all want to know what is happening now and all of the details.
This is a sad state we've come to in the television and radio broadcasts and the news networks. After all, they have to have something to talk about, so why not make some of it up. Embellish it a little to up a rating for that newscast. Media today has fallen to yellow journalism and Hearst would be proud. |
| Media Control: The Spectacular Achievements of Propaganda (Open Media Series) - Noam Chomsky |
 |
Not Totally Convincing, But... |
| Chomsky questions the quality and motives of the media in the U.S. In this is a very small book, just 100 pages of large-font writing, he gives a brief history of propaganda mechanisms, especially in the U.S., from the Creel Commission in 1916 through the G.H.W. Bush administration. Chomsky makes some strong historical points, and raises some good questions about media functions today, and what role they play in our political process. The major flaw is that he makes many sweeping declarations, and does not always back them up with facts. This combination will blunt the effectiveness of his arguments for centrists or those on the right. |
