Maui for the adventurer

This book is extremely well-written & organized, and it was very helpful. All the color pictures & maps were a big plus, and I believe the travel agents & locals who said it was the best guidebook available. However, the authors failed to provide a caveat: some excursions are best suited to very active people unencumbered by kids or seniors who aren't uptight about crossing other people's land to get to the best hikes or waterfalls. By the 3rd day, after the drive to Hana, we were jokingly calling the book "Maui for Swinging Singles." We enjoyed the sights & the Hana drive was well-worth the time, but spending several hours on a winding road with kids who would rather be back at the beach or pool is not reviewed in the book. When we drove to Haleakala (also a beautiful change of scenery), we had it figured out & left the 3 youngest kids back at the condo with a willing adult.

The authors do a fabulous job of outlining the huge number of activities available, and I'd love to go back someday & get some hiking in when the kids are older. But in the quest to get the most from your vacation, I think it bears remembering that it is perfectly okay to lay on the beach and do nothing. Our favorite days were just hanging out on the beach by the condo, going in the ocean with the kids, watching them make sand castles, and snorkeling on the reef right there. The one time we tried to drive to a recommended snorkeling area, we couldn't figure out how to get in the water over all the rocks, and with an 11-year-old in tow, headed straight back for our home reef. This is Hawaii, and the beautiful warm, blue waters & clean white sand studded with palm trees are pretty nice without the compulsion to experience every single thing the island has to offer.

This is the best book for travelling in Maui. I just purchased this one because I wanted his latest edition....I have been to Maui several times and I always refer to the latest edition to find out new things to see and do. Doughty's books are more like a local doing the review rather than an author doing a travelog.

This book is great to read. The author's give personality to it and it is full of beautiful photo's. I enjoyed it very much.
I bought Frommer's guide, too. IT was black and white and boring.
Maui Revealed has the best weblinks for hotel reviews! They have detailed information as well as arieal views of all the
resorts and condos. A must have for the Maui Traveler!!!
